3826-3840: “two-and-one-half
story mansarded brick commercial row. Arched
entrances, most have first floor front commercia1 alterations, pressed metal
cornices. Number 3826, the only stuccoed facade, has
pedimented doorway. All but 38 26 have second floor projecting wood bays; 3836,
3838 and 3840 - aluminum sided. Carved decorative wood cornice across entire row;
slate shingled mansard with single and paired dormer windows be 1 ow projecting
Victorian bracketed gab1es. – Contributing.”

The
1875 directory lists him as a carpenter living at 1742 Glover St.
“Mr.
John B. Martel, a carpenter and builder of West Philadelphia, has been missing
since Saturday. He had a contract to put up a number of houses at Broad and Germantown avenue, and on Saturday drew a large sum of money
from bank, with which to pay his hands. He has always borne a good reputation.”
