3826-3840: “two-and-one-half story mansarded brick commercial row. Arched entrances, most have first floor front commercia1 alterations, pressed metal cornices. Number 3826, the only stuccoed facade, has pedimented doorway. All but 38 26 have second floor projecting wood bays; 3836, 3838 and 3840 - aluminum sided. Carved decorative wood cornice across entire row; slate shingled mansard with single and paired dormer windows be 1 ow projecting Victorian bracketed gab1es. – Contributing.”

The History

 

1878 Directory (Fall 1877): Martel John B., builder at 3823 Baring St.

            The 1875 directory lists him as a carpenter living at 1742 Glover St.

            “Mr. John B. Martel, a carpenter and builder of West Philadelphia, has been missing since Saturday. He had a contract to put up a number of houses at Broad and Germantown avenue, and on Saturday drew a large sum of money from bank, with which to pay his hands. He has always borne a good reputation.” (Inquirer, April 30, 1878)

1897 Directory: Priestley Thomas J., pattern maker

 Priestley Thomas J., Jr., printer, T. J. Priestley, Jr., & Co. at 3832 Lancaster Ave.

            The 1900 census lists them living at 3841 Lancaster Ave.

 

1900: Apparently no one was living here at time of this census It was the Priestley printing company.

 

1909 Directory: Bosserdet E. Louis, varnisher

 Bosserdet Lydia S., hairdresser

 

1910:

Edmund Bosserdet      34        Varnisher in piano factory; born in France, immigrated in 1901; owner with a mortgage

Lydia S. Bosserdet       32        Hairdresser at home; married 8 years, no children; born in Germany, immigrated in 1879

 

1918 WWI Draft Card: Bosserdet Edmond Louis, hardwood finisher, Schumaker Piano Co., 23rd & Chestnut Sts. He was born Nov. 13, 1875. He was married to Lydia Siegfried Bosserdet.

 

1920:

Edmund L. Bosserdet              44        Hardwood finisher for department store; parents born in France; owner, free of a mortgage

Lydia S. Bosserdet                   42        Hairdresser with own parlor; parents born in Germany

            In 1930 and 1940, they lived in Winslow, Camden Co., N.J.
