3707 Powelton Street

 

3705-3707: “Second Empire-style, two-and-one-half story double; stone facade over brick construction. First-floor. full-height windows. Original wood porch intact but Number 3705 enclosed with glass. Same decorative applied wood cornice, slate-shingled roof, and dormer as its neighbor 3701-03.

1865, Dec. 6: Title for Block of land starting at the NW corner of Powelton and N. 37th, proceeding north to 310 N. 37th, then west to Lancaster Ave. transferred to John H. McIlvain by Lydia E. Baring

            The property became part of the McIlvain lumber business.

            John Judson Edwards, born 1835 [sic. 1836], was the son of John D. Edwards. Mary Elizabeth (Cookingham) Edwards graduated from Vassar College, class of 1879. They were married in Lee, Massachusetts, Sept. 29, 1886. She was the daughter of Peter G. and Elizabeth Hulett Cookingham. He was a farmer. John and Mary’s first child, George L. Edwards was born 1888 and died in 1894. (General Catalogue of the Officers and Graduates of Vassar College, 1920)

            John Judson Edwards died Jan. 16, 1939 in Malvern, Chester Co. He suffered from senile dementia which was diagnosed in 1934. He was born Dec. 22, 1836.

 

1936: An application was made for one for a restaurant/tearoom on the first floor with [a?] dwelling above.
