The History of the Building

 

3618-26: “five, two-and-one-half story, two-register mansarded brick rowhouse. Some have their original double wood and. glass paneled doors and/or their wood porches. 3618 has a projecting first floor bay. Each house has two dormers projecting from the mansarded roof; except for 3618, all mansards have original slate shingles.”

Edward E. Crueger (1830-1891)

 

            Edward E. Crueger and Elizabeth Garrett Eldridge were married in Johnstown, Cambria Co., Pa. on Nov. 25, 1864.  In 1870, they lived in Altoona, Blair Co., Pa.  Edward was a “draughtsman” for the railroad.  He claimed $2,500 in real estate and $600 in personal property.  Also living with them was Edward’s son, Edward Adolph, by his first wife, Cornelia Vickery (1839-1861).

                                    In the 1887 Directory, he is listed at 233 S. 4th St.

1888, July 13: Death of Stephen L. Adams, 68 years old, of 3620 Powelton Ave. Members of the Commercial Lodge, No. 236, I.O.O.F. and surviving member of the 118th Pennsylvania Volunteers Corn Exchange and Baker Post, No. 8, G.A.R. are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from his late residence.  He worked as a bookbinder.  His parents were Stephen W. and Margaret Adams.             He was a Private in Company E. of the 188th.  He enrolled Aug. 11, 1862 and mustered out with the company, June 1, 1865,  In 1890, his widow, Lucy was living at 3612 Hamilton St.

 

1900:

William H. Herbert      51        Contractor and builder; born in England, immigrated in 1869; owner, free of a mortgage

            The 1881 Directory lists him at 3413 Race St.  In the 1880 census he is listed as Harry Herbert at that address.  He had a brother, George, who also lived at 3413 Race St. in 1880.  The 1881 directory lists George at 3728 Lancaster Ave.  He was about 14 years younger than William and was born in Canada which suggests the family lived there before moving to the U.S.

            William H. Herbert and Clara R. Cline were married in Philadelphia in 1889.
