The History of the Building

 

3610-12: “two-and-one-half story. Second Empire-style double with original Victorian wood porch and slate-shingled mansard. Four registers; stone facade over brick”

1875, Sept. 14: Title for 3610-12 Baring St. transferred to E. Spencer Miller & Wilson by George H. Watson

            E. Spencer Miller was Dean of the Law School, University of Pennsylvania. He lived in the old Powel mansion at 32nd and Race.

 

1876, May 6: Title for 3610-12 Baring St. transferred to Henry B. Chapman by E. Spencer Miller & Wilson

 

1878 Directory: Nathan Sellers, flour

            The 1876 directory (Fall, 1875) lists Nathan Sellers of Nathan Sellers & Co. (Nathan Sellers, Samuel C. Woolman and Joseph S. Keen, Jr.) commercial merchants at 2106 Market St. living at 118 N. 34th St.

 

1879, Dec. 31: Title for 3610-12 Baring St. transferred to Alfred P. Chapman by Henry B. Chapman

            The same day the title was transferred to Anna G. Chapman, Henry’s wife.

Hannah Mc Bride        24        Servant; born in Ireland

            Mary Sellers was the daughter of John Sidney Keen and Hannah McIlvain. The Keen and McIlvain families were long-term residents of the area. The McIlvains settled on Market St. about 1805. The Keen family lived at 32nd and Chestnut, now the site of the original building of the Drexel Institute. A brief overview of the Sellers family appeared in the Powelton Post, March, 2009.

            Norman P. Sellers died June 4, 1885.

 

1882, Oct. 23: Death of Sidney K. Sellers, 18 years old, of 3612 Baring St.

 

1884 Directory: Sellers, Nathan, flour

            The 1886 directory lists him at 3310 Race St. In 1900 they lived at 3308 Race St.

 

1885 Directory: Ellen M. Tygert, widow

                        Herman S. Tygert of J. E. Tygert & Co. (John E. & Herman S. Tygert, Willard G. Pierce & William F. Brown), fertilizer, 42 S. Delaware Ave.  [The 1883 directory lists his home address as Delaware.]

1893: Title for 3610-12 Baring St. transferred to Henry P. Chapman by will of Ann G. Chapman

 

1894, Aug. 16: Title for 3610-12 Baring St. transferred to Lowrie Montgomery [a lawyer] by Henry P. Chapman

            The property was then subdivided with 3610 going to Ella P. Chapman and 3612 going to Alfred P. Chapman.

 

1897, Oct. 26: Title transferred to Mary Osborn by Alfred P. Chapman

 

1900:

Jane Osborne               68        Widowed, seven children, six surviving; born in Ireland, immigrated in 1843; owns with a mortgage

            The 1895 directory lists Jane A. Osborn, widow of Robert, 2221 Spring Garden. The 1880 census shows them living at 729 N. 26th St. Robert was a 62 year-old retired carpet manufacturer who was born in Ireland. (He was 18 years her senior.)  They had five children between the ages of 4 and 20.

 

1904, Jun. 13: Title transferred to Mary T. Platt by Mary Osborn

            “PLATT, Charles, M. D., Ph.D., F. C. S.:

            Physician: born in Montclair, N. J., March 16, 1869, of an old American family of founders and patriots, dating from 1638: was graduated from Lehigh University in 1890, and has pursued post-graduate course at Ohio University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Edinburgh (medalist in anatomy) . Homeopathic Hospital, London, Ecole de Medicine, Paris, and Hahnemann College of Philadelphia. Assistant chemist of Cambria Iron Company, Johnstown, Pa.; chief chemist for Thomas A. Edison at Llewellyn Park laboratory. Since 1894 Professor of Chemistry and Toxicology at Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital, Philadelphia; sometime lecturer at the Children's Homeopathic Hospital, Philadelphia. For some time associate editor of Science, New York. Author of text book of "Qualitative Analysis and Medical Chemistry," fourth edition. 1903. Contributor to the engineering, chemical and medical journals. Fellow of the Chemical Society of London: honorary Fellow of the Society of Biological Chemistry, London; member of the American Chemical Society, the Société Chimique de Paris, the Medical Jurisprudence Society, the Medical and Surgical Society of Philadelphia, and of numerous other medical and social organizations. Mary Platt                    41        Married 18 years, no children; born in Ireland (English), immigrated 1891

Bridget Brennan           28        Servant; born in Ireland (English)

            He married Moira (Mary) T. O’Hare, S. Bethlehem in 1891. (Delta Upsilon Decennial Catalogue, 1903)  She died between 1910 and 1916. In 1916, Charles married Mildred Sellers Almy, the widow of William E. Almy who died in 1901. Mildred was the daughter of John Sellers, Jr. and grew up at 3300 Arch St.

            In 1917, he was listed at Hamilton Court, 39th and Chestnut. (Catalogue of Delta Upsilon, 1917)

 

1912, Mar. 18: Title transferred to Hannah G. Hogan by Mary T. Platt

 

1920:

Anna Hogan                74        Widowed; born in Ireland, immigrated in 1857, became a citizen in 1867; owner with a mortgage

Mary G. Hogan            44        Born in N.Y., father born in N.Y., mother in Ireland

Anna M. Hogan           42        Wholesale cigar dealer; father born in N.Y., mother in Ireland

Hannah G. Hogan       37        Bookkeeper for plumbing supply co.; father born in N.Y., mother in Ireland

John J. Hogan              34        Liquor dealer in saloon; father born in N.Y., mother in Ireland

            In 1910, they lived at 3621 Spring Garden. Anna had 6 children. She reported her age as 59. In 1900, she listed her age as 45. She was already widowed and was living at 3619 Fairmount with all six of her children who were between 15 and 24. She was the widow of Peter Hogan who was born in Ireland and worked on the railroad. He apparently died in his 30s between 1870 and 1880.

 

1925, Dec. 1: Title transferred to Alex Sinclair and Agnes, his wife by Hannah G. Hogan

George Redman           26        Shoe buyer for department store; earned $5,700 in 1939 for 48 weeks of work

            They lived here in 1935.

1954, Dec. 15: Title transferred to Edward H. Weintraub, Eva, his wife, and Ethel Weintraub by George M. and Marguerite Curry

            Edward Weintraub was a Russian-born Jew who was a retail grocer. He and his wife, Eva, immigrated in 1910 and became naturalized citizens in 1915. In 1940, he was 34 and Eva was 30. They had two sons and two daughters ages 14 months to 8 years. They lived at 2133 S. 10th St. In 1950, they lived at 5531 Walnut St.
