The History of the Building

 

1866, June 18: Title for 3600-3610 Hamilton St. transferred to Elias P. Smithers by John Magrow

Elias P. Smithers, a lawyer and “conveyancer.” He was just an agent for builder John G. Williams who developed much of the south side of the 3600 block of Hamilton. In the 1870 census, Williams claimed $100,000 in real estate whereas Smithers didn’t claim any.

 

3608-10: “two-and-one-half story Second Empire style brick double with side Victorian porches and entrances; first-floor projecting bays, bracketed wood cornice and asphalt-shingled roof with two dormers.”

1914, Jan. 21: Death of Rebecca M. Hillman, wife of Samuel Hillman. Funeral from her late home, 3608 Hamilton St.

 

1914, Apr. 16: Title transferred to John M. Currie & Annie P., his wife by Samuel Hillman

 

1916, Dec. 20: Death of Samuel Hillman, 83 years old. Relatives and friends, Perkins Lodge No. 402, F. and A. M., invited to funeral services at 44 W. Pomono St., Germantown.

            In 1930, the Murphy family was living next door at 3606 Hamilton St., which they owned. Elizabeth Katharine Murphy died in 1944. She was widowed and living at 935 Wynnewood Rd.

 

1941, May. 26: Title transferred to James R. McDowell by Pennsylvania Co. for Insurance on Lives

            Then immediately to Victor G. Baker by James R. McDowell

 

1941, Oct. 26: Title transferred to Emma Johnson by Victor G. Baker

 

1942, Apr. 20: Death of Mary Clara Rauch, 71 years old, wife of the late William W. Rauch, daughter of Governor Morris Keefer and Elizabeth Davis.

 

1944, Aug. 16: Title transferred to Leonard G. Cook by Emma Johnson

 

1948, May. 1: Death of Margaret P. Cooke, 62 years old, wife of the late James H. Cooke. Relatives and friends, E. V. M. Sodality, Phila. Chapter Women of the Moose, Ye-Ma-See Council 291, D. of P., invited to funeral. Solemn Requiem Mass at Church of St. Agatha.
