3420-3432 Powelton Ave.

 

The History of the Building

 

3420-3432 were built by James & Charles A. Maguire along with five houses around the corner on 35th St. They were predicted to cost $100,000. (Phila. Builders Guide, Mar. 20, 1895) They were purchased by Frederick A. Poth (216 N. 33rd St.) in February 1896 (Phila. Builders’ Guide, Feb. 15, 1896) “Messrs. Maguire recently completed a large block of handsome houses at Thirty-fifth Street and Powelton Avenue, all of which were sold to F. A. Poth, the sale representing an investment of over $300,000.” (Phila. Builders’ Guide, Feb. 26, 1896)

 

3420-3432: “three-story rowhouses, built as a single row; rusticated stone basements; Pompeiian brick facades. Single porch supported by wood Tuscan~ columns extends across front of all seven houses. Each house has paired windows, repetition interrupted at second ~Jo6r by alternating projecting bays and tripartite windows topped by terra cotta panels; most have tall gables with cast terra cotta ornament; 3422 and 3430 have Dutch gables; a mansarded roof with red pantiles extends between each gable.”

1902, June 29: Death of Samuel H. Haines, 53 years old, burial at West Laurel Hill Cemetery

            In 1910, the Haines and Brown families lived at 3420 Powelton Ave.

Albert P. Brubaker       69        Professor at medical college; renting for $110 per month

Edith Brubaker            63        Mother born in Md.

Mary Dunn                  50        Servant; born in N.Y., parents born in Ireland

            Earlier, they lived at 105 N. 34th St. (See a younger photo of him there.)

 

Albert Philson Brubaker, M.D. (1852-1943)

 

“BRUBAKER, Albert Philson:

Physician, physiologist ; born at Somerset, Pa., Aug. 12, 1852 ; son of Henry Brubaker and Emeline Philson Brubaker. After completing his studies in the schools of his native place he entered Jefferson Medical College from which he was graduated as M. D. in 1874; and later the degree of A. M. was conferred upon him by Franklin and Marshall College. Dr. Brubaker married in Philadelphia, Sept. 27, 1883, Edith B. Needles. He engaged for several years in the practice of medicine in Philadelphia after his graduation; was appointed demonstrator of physiology in Jefferson Medical College, 1880; has been professor of physiology in the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery since 1885; lecturer on anatomy and physiology in Drexel Institute since 1893 and adjunct professor of physiology and hygiene in Jefferson Medical College from 1896 to 1904, when he was elected to the full professorship. Dr. Brubaker

is author of a Compend [sic.] of Physiology and Text-Book of Human Physiology, as well as numerous professional papers and contributions to medical journals. He is a member of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, the Academy of Natural Sciences, the American Physiological Society and the American Philosophical Society.”

            Edith Brubaker was the daughter of Caleb and Annie Needles. He was a druggist. Albert and Edith were married in 1883 and lived with her parents at 1200 Race St. for several years. Edith studied biology at the University of Pennsylvania in 1891-‘92. Later, she was involved in several organizations such as the New Century Club and the Visiting Nurses Association.

Sarah Emma Joyce She was the daughter of Henry Brubaker and Emeline Philson. She was born in Somerset Co., Pa. in 1857. She had 8 years of schooling. She married William Frederick Joyce in 1893. They had one child, Albert Brubaker Joyce, who died in 1901 at age 5. In 1910, she lived with her brother and his family at 105 N. 34th St. The 1920 census lists her as Matron of a dormitory at 3424 Powelton Ave. She was widowed and. In 1940, thy lived at 109 N. 34th St. She died there in 1941.

 

1932, Mar. 14: Death of Edith (Needles) Brubaker, 75 years old

            About 1934, Alfred Brubaker moved to 109 N. 34th St. along with his sisters Sarah Joyce and Ann Phillips, and a niece, Anna Phillips. He died there in 1943.
