1895 Directory: Rev. William Y. Brown

            He was a chaplain during the Civil War, appoint in May, 1862. He was born in Achor, Ohio, but was appointed from Pennsylvania. In 1881, he was minister of the Darby Borough Presbyterian Church.

            In 1887, they lived at 204 S. 42nd St. In 1891, they lived at 4119 Pine St. The 1906 Blue Book lists them at 238 S. 38th St.

            Their daughter, Anna Robertson Brown, lived at 3603 Baring St. in 1892. She was the first woman to be granted a Ph.D. by the University of Pennsylvania in 1892.

“HOSKINS, William H.:

“Veterinarian; born in Delaware County, Pa. July 23. 1860; was graduated from the American Veterinary College in 1881; since then has been actively engaged in the practice of his profession. He served the American Veterinary Medical Association as Secretary, 1889-1893 and as President 1893-1896, and is ex-President of the Pennsylvania State Veterinary Medical Association and the Keystone Veterinary Medical Association, and also of the Pennsylvania State Board of Veterinary Examiners, of which he is now Secretary. He is instructor in Veterinary Jurisprudence, Ethics and business methods at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Hoskins has been editor of the Journal of Comparative Medicine and Veterinary Archives since 1895. In the political field he has been vice-chairman of the Democratic City Committee since 1898 and was Democratic candidate for Mayor of Philadelphia in 1899.
