The History of the Building

 

The northern edge of this property was part of the northern boundary of the Bingham-Baring estate.

 

The red brick tower was added in 1893. It was designed by architect Minerva Parker Nichols. (Phila. Builders’ Guide, April, 19, 1893)

 

3311-3313: “three-story cruciform plan Italianate style double, with bracketed overhang typical of Powelton neighborhood. Recessed front patios of 3311 filled in circa 1920. 3313 has circa 1890 three-story brick tower with corbelled brick cornice added to front and second-floor cast iron enclosed metal bay over columns added to recessed bay”

1904: “SHEATZ, John Oscar:  Member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from Philadelphia; born in Lehigh County, Pa., Feb. 27, 1856; educated in the public schools and spent one term in Preparatory Department of Muhlenburg College. Allentown; was employed in the Baldwin Locomotive Works thirteen years, having had charge of different departments the last four years he was in their employ. He left to engage in the coal business and is now in the real estate business; is also Treasurer of the Frank Queen Publishing Company of New York; was a member of the First Regiment, National Guard of Pennsylvania.
