The History of the Building

 

200-206 N. 34th St.: Both these buildings are three-story, four-bay red brick doubles. Horizontal bands of pressed brick ornament the building. Stepped bricks advance outward towards the flat roof line giving the appearance. of a slightly flared upper story. The houses have original wood porches. 204-06 has some altered posts, altered balustrades and roughcasted base.

1969: The houses on the west side of the 200 block of 34th St. were saved from condemnation and demolition by an agreement between the Powelton Village Homeowners Association and the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority. (see Powelton Quarterly, vol 1(1); pp 1 &3.)

1878 Atlas shows the owner of 200-210 as Henry D. Justi.

            Henry D. and Elizabeth Justi lived at 3401 Baring St.

1892, March: Deed transferred from Henry M. & Elizabeth (wife) Justi to Charles & Anne (wife) Thomas.

            Charles Thomas was a clergyman born in Maryland. In 1880, they lived with her mother, Ann Grier (widow of Matthew Grier) at 1606 Wallace St. Thomas’s niece, Annie Kollock. (see 1900 and 1910 below), also lived with them.

 

1896, Apr. 29: Death of Charles F. Thomas, 55 years

He was "connected with the Presbyterian Presbytery…  Services were held at the Princeton Presbyterian Church of which deceased was latterly a member.” (Inquirer, Mar 3)

            James P. Forsyth married Harriet Z. Gilmore in August 1903 in Concord, N.H. (Annual report of the receipts and expenditures, Concord, N.H., 1904) He was still a student. He was the son of James M. and Mary J. (Perkins) Forsyth. His father was born in the Bahamas and was a Rear Admiral in the Navy. In the late 1880s, he was stationed at the Naval Home in Philadelphia. She was a teaching living in Concord with her parents, Charles L. and Marie Ellen (Powers) Gilmore. He was a broker. In 1910, James and “Hattie” were living in Concord, N.H. with her mother. James listed his occupation as “own income.”

1918, November: Deed transferred from Annie P. Kollock to Amelia R. Justi.

            Amelia Justi was the daughter of the original owners of the house, Henry D. and Elizabeth Justi. In 1920, she was living with her parents and a sister at 3401 Baring St.

 

1919, December: Deed transferred from Amelia R. Justi to Isabel P. Davis.

 

1920: house not included in census. The census was run in January. The Davis sister may not have moved in yet.

 

1930:

Elizabeth Davis           66        Father born in England, mother in N. Ireland; owner, house valued at $13,000

Isabelle P. Davis          62        Sister; father born in England, mother in N. Ireland

            The Davis sisters were the daughters of Henry E. Davis and Eliza Pollack.

 

1940:

Elizabeth J. Davis        79        Two years of high school; owner, house valued at $4,000

Isabelle P. Davis          76        Sister; 8 years of schooling

Margaret Davis            41        Sister; 4 years of high school

 

1941, July 7: Death of Isabelle P. Davis, 76 years old

 

1952, July 16: Death of Margaret P. Davis, about 89 years old

 

1953, June: Deed transferred from Margaret Davis Estate to Elizabeth J. Davis.

 

1956, Nov. 12: Death of Elizabeth J. Davis, 97 years old, of 202 N. 34th St. She died at a nursing home in Yeadon, Pa.

 

2009: Home of the Drexel chapter of ΔΖ, Delta Zeta, fraternity
